Newark: Free Pet Food for Pet Owners in Need
According to official reports, Associated Humane Societies - Newark euthanized almost 1,000 pets in 2017. That's roughly 25% of its total animal intake.
By reducing animal shelter intake, NJ STRAYS works to reduce the burden on shelters making it easier for them to maintain animal welfare and work toward humane means of reducing their populations (adoption, rescues, etc.). We're a No-Kill organization, and that's what our programs seek to achieve:
Lost and Found Pets helps pet owners recover lost pets before they enter the shelter system
Barncat Relocation places at-risk cats with rural adopters to avoid animal control interference or harm from human behaviors
Owner Surrender Prevention assists pet owners in need to help them avoid the potentially catastrophic outcome of placing their beloved pet in a shelter due to financial or other burdens
We also run a pet food pantry from our headquarters. Due to personal challenges facing our volunteer base this year, we haven't been able to staff the pantry regularly. However, we've been blessed with kind pet food and supply donations from animal lovers like you. We've decided to host a pet pantry open house in the high-kill city of Newark. Residents of Essex county are welcome to come and receive free pet food and supplies if they are facing hard times.
