2018: We Came, We Saw...We Saved Some Pets

January 17, 2019

As NJ STRAYS continues to grow, we are also honing our activities to provide maximum benefit to the eight North Jersey counties we serve. 2018 was a landmark year for lost pet reunions. We started in-depth tracking late last spring, and can confirm that we average about 111 assists per month. What does that mean? It means that more than a hundred pets per month found their way home because of our online network, pet owner coaching, and search and rescue efforts.

Speaking of our Lost and Found Pets project, we were able to microchip 64 animals in 2018. Our clinics in Kearny, Phillipsburg and at various animal events and expos afforded us the chance to implant the chips for little or no cost to pet owners. (Read more about the value of microchipping pets here.)

Our Barn and Outdoor Cat Relocation team was extremely active throughout spring and summer, relocating 99 at-risk cats to barns and rural havens. Our barncats are spayed or neutered and still can't seem to find safety in their urban / suburban community environments. We also sponsored the spay / neuter of 25 additional felines.

Our Owner Surrender Prevention project really took off in 2018 and will be a top priority for growth in 2019. We were able to prevent 23 pets from entering the shelter system last year. That's an enormous win for our No-Kill mission because it means we prevented euthanasia in 23 separate cases.

NJ STRAYS is poised to grow and improve upon these outstanding numbers in 2019. If you'd like to join us, please consider becoming a financial sponsor, a community partner or a volunteer. We're also actively recruiting pet foster homes for Owner Surrender Prevention.

Happy New Year!
