Struggling with exactly what to give friends and family members for Christmas, Hanukkah or other holidays this season? You're not alone...but you are cutting it down to the wire! Hurry up!
We've put together a list of dos and don'ts when it comes to holiday gift shopping for the animal and pet lovers on your list. The biggest DON'T is not to actually give a live pet or animal to anybody. As tempting as it might be to find a cuddly kitten or puppy on whom to tie a big red bow, keep in mind that choosing a pet is a personal and lifestyle-specific task.
In fact, NJ STRAYS offers a free consultation from our pet behaviorist for before a family buys or adopts a new pet. It's very important to assess whether or not the animal in question is right for your lifestyle, and whether or not you are right for it.
There are a lot of ways you can celebrate animals in the gifts you give, however. DO sponsor an animal through a reputable charity. This is a great idea when you're giving something animal-friendly to someone who either doesn't have a pet, or who has recently lost one.
Best Friends offers multiple ways to give back in honor of your giftee: sponsor an animal, pay a tribute, celebrate with a memorial and others
World Wildlife Fund lets you virtually "adopt" a wild animal with a donation in honor of, then send a card announcing this gift to your gift recipient
Similarly, dolphin-lovers can "adopt" Winter or Hope this holiday season by donating to Clearwater Marine Aquarium
Sponsoring animals is a wonderful way to give the gift of animal love, without the long-term obligation of pet care. Donating to a local No-Kill animal shelter is another great way to celebrate animals in your community. If the shelter doesn't provide a certificate of sponsorship, a nice card with "I donated in your name to..." works just as well.
When giving a present to people with pets, practicality dictates you DO give gift cards to pet supply stores, or even wrappable necessities such as food, blankets and accessories. If you're dealing in specific items, however, make sure you know exactly what pet supplies are appropriate for the animals and pet owners in question.
DO buy adorable or funny trinkets, pet supplies, clothing and accessories for the animal lovers in your life. Etsy is a great place to find homemade gifts dedicated to specific pets. You can also shop the gift shops of your favorite animal charities. NJ STRAYS, for instance, offers a wealth of whimsical pet lover gifts on Zazzle.com.
This holiday season, we are also partnering with the New Jersey Devils. Buy a ticket for the January 13, 2018 game as a gift for the sports or hockey fan in your life. Proceeds benefit the NJ STRAYS mission to reduce animal shelter intake in New Jersey by saving strays and helping pet owners in need.
