  • According to The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), about 6.5 million companion animals enter U.S. animal shelters nationwide each year.

  • Each year, approximately 1.5 million shelter dogs and cats are euthanized.

  • Only about 700,000 animals who enter shelters as strays are returned to their owners.

What do these statistics mean? They add up to the chance that a pet surrendered from your home to an animal shelter may never live in a home as a family pet again.

Less than half of surrender cases result from pet problems such as aggressive behavior or severe health issues. Other common challenges pet owners face include feeding, grooming and housing their pets. Sometimes, dogs and cats are surrendered for financial reasons; other times the reasons stem from family or personal issues.
